Abstract

This article presents the results of a study conducted in the Institutional Program for Scientific Initiation Grants and sought to understand the social representations that university professors share about the meanings of university. The study aimed to identify the social representations of professors about the university. The research is based on Moscovician theory and its theoretical developments. The Free Word Association Technique (FWAT) was used to collect data, allowing a qualitative analysis of the responses. The results show that the university is perceived as a center of knowledge production, with an emphasis on the social and political formation of the subjects present there. Therefore, it is concluded that the social representation of the university shared by the professors investigated is objectified in the formative function of the university and anchors its elements in its social and political function.
