This study is a qualitative empirical research whose goal is to describe, from the theoretical assumptions of the fraud triangle (CRESSEY, 1953) and the corporate scandals (COFFEE JUNIOR, 2005), characteristics of fraud in the financial statements of a North American company. We sought to investigate the motivations and purposes of the fraudulent action, the methods of accounting manipulation used and the corporate governance of the organization. The research method used was the case study, and the selection was based on a list of accounting scandals mentioned in previous research. Considering the model of corporate governance of the company, the motivation and the method of operation of the fraud, as well as the purpose of the fraudulent agent, can be explained by the theory of corporate scandals and the fraud triangle theory. The relevance of this study is the empirical analysis of poorly researched theories, enabling to think if entrepreneurs, managers and Brazilian shareholders would be subject to the same ills observed in fraudulent actions of North American corporations.Downloads
