Abstract

The assignment of expatriates to work in the foreign subsidiaries of multinational enterprises is influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors to organizations. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between cultural distance and expatriate strategy of Japanese multinational enterprises in Latin America. We conducted quantitative study using secondary data obtained in the analyzes of the database Japanese Overseas Investments by Country. The period of 2006 to 2012 was analyzed, configuring a longitudinal study. The data analysis was done using multiple regression. It was found that there is an inverse and significant relationship between expatriation and cultural distance and a direct and significant relationship between expatriation and subsidiary industry and also the size of the subsidiary. It concludes that multinational companies consider the cultural distance in the decision of expatriation assigning more expatriates to subsidiaries with smaller cultural distance between countries.
