Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the design and use of the Balanced Scorecard in a shared services center (SSC). A case study was conducted in a SSC that uses Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in their performance management process. The framework proposed by Ferreira and Otley was used for data collection in order to visualize possible adaptations of the original BSC model in the SSC, according to the peculiarities of the units constituting it. The results indicate that the prevailing characteristics of SSC, such as structure, strategy, and indicators directed at optimizing processes through cost and deadline reduction, have influence on BSC, substantially affecting the way it is used. It is concluded that Ferreira and Otley’s framework provides holistic descriptions of SSC design and of how it is used in an organizational structure with shared services.
