Introduction: Excellent medical training, from the contemporary perspective of the regulations and curricular guidelines of the undergraduate Medicine course, advocates, in addition to technical knowledge, the promotion of a more general, humanistic and critical preparation with the development of skills and competencies for act at different levels of health care. In this sense, the use of active methodologies in the training process constitutes an innovative and very relevant pedagogical practice, as it makes the student the protagonist of the learning process, stimulating initiative, creativity and reflective criticality. OBJECTIVE: This report aims to share a successful experience of using a film production as a resource for medical education in the discussion and understanding of the concepts of “health” and “illness”. METHODS: This is an experience report carried out through critical-reflective analysis of the film “The Danish Girl” developed from the implementation of methodologies and experiences provided by the activity developed in a curricular component of a University in the Triângulo Mineiro region. RESULTS: Experiences and reflections obtained through the activity were explained, through active learning and debate between peers. CONCLUSIONS: The pedagogical and formative potential of the film stands out as it promotes a very relevant reflection on the social demands of adapting gender to biological sex promoted by the health sector, encouraging the debate on essential issues in the fight for autonomy, for the recognition of civil rights and access to humanized and dignified health care for transgender and transsexual individuals.
