THE FAMILY OF CANCER PATIENTS: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Introduction: Cancer is a chronic and severe disease, spreading out to all family members, who need toreorganize themselves and face the needs of the sick patient. Objective: to identify publications about thefamily of cancer client and describe how the literature on family addresses. Methods: integrative review ofliterature, consisting of analysis and synthesis of many existing studies, investigating the same or similarproblems. The survey was conducted at the Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde [Virtual Health Library] (BVL) indatabases: SciELO, LILACS and Medline, with the following keywords: family; nursing and cancer. Datacollection took place in April 2012, and the criteria for inclusion were: articles full available in Portuguese(Brazil), English and Spanish, which depict the daily life of family caregivers of cancer clients in the lastfive years. Results: 14 articles were selected, which were first distinguished, and after reading the articles,the categories with common themes were identified and developed to expose the synthesis of knowledgefound, which were: relationships and family adjustments; knowledge of the family; improving the qualityof families’ life; nursing diagnosis. Conclusion: Nursing, part of the multidisciplinary team, should seethat oncologic clients and their family members are individuals of the same situation, and should focus itsattention not only on the individual with diagnosis, but also look carefully at the household that is withhim, since the real intention is a comprehensive care, with effective and quality.Downloads
